Are there any exclusions that apply to critical illness insurance?

Pre-existing conditions
Pre-existing conditions are usually excluded from a critical illness policy. Furthermore, there may be a time period after starting the policy where nothing will be paid if you are diagnosed as suffering from specified critical illnesses.

Extreme sports or hobbies
The insurance company ask if you follow any activities that can be dangerous. For example motor sport, climbing, caving, diving, sky diving and parachuting.

Insurance companies treat these activities in different ways. They either increase your premium (known as “rating”) or they rule out any claim that arises as a result of that activity.

If you follow an extreme sport you should tell the Critical Illness Adviser from ClickLife when he/she phones you. They will find out which insurance company could be the best one for you.

Emigration
Planning to emigrate? Insurance companies will not meet a claim if you are resident outside the UK. Important; there is no problem if you are simply holidaying, temporarily working or visiting abroad.

Claims that will be excluded
All companies will not pay out if:

  • you do not take realistic steps to seek { mortgages } medical advice for your illness or if you do not follow medical advice,
  • you drink excessive amounts of alcohol or are involved in solvent abuse or take drugs (other than under prescription)
  • you cause yourself injury
  • your injury is sustained as a result of invasion, war, riot or civil commotion
  • you do not mention on your application anything that may be relevant to your health, or health prospects
