What value of critical illness cover do I need?

The obvious response is; enough to meet your needs. The amount you need depends on your current family and financial circumstances. What would be the impact on your finances should you be diagnosed with a critical illness?

The following may help you decide how much cover you might want:

Current Mortgages, Credit Cards and loans

How much would you need for your mortgage or credit card to be repaid in full? Freedom from debt does wonders for recovery.

Costs related to recovery

What about the costs of travelling to and from the consultants and specialist hospitals? If you are in hospital for a period of time, how much it cost your family to travel to the hospital or find accommodation in a nearby hotel? After an operation you may wish to join a fitness club or swimming club. You may even value a holiday as part of your convalescence.

Medical costs

If you do not have any hospital insurance to cover operations, should some provision for this be included in your cover? Possibly you may wish to consider complementary medicines or the cost of medicine if they are not available on prescription. What about the costs of the consultants’ advice sessions. After their consultation there may be extra costs for occupational therapy. The NHS may meet some of these costs if you are prepared to wait.

Your home

Some conditions may require adaptations to be made to your home. You may have to put in a ramp put in the home where you have steps. If you need assistance with walking the benefits of having an electric wheelchair or a mini-scooter can enable you to be more independent. However, this equipment costs money and, although many can be obtained through the Red Cross or NHS, they may not be available in the type or time you need them. Imagine you need a wheelchair, how would your home need to be altered? Are the cupboards at the right height for you? Are your doorways the wide enough to take a wheelchair? Would your flooring need melamine instead of carpet for an indoor electric chair? Would you need help getting upstairs? Social Services may expect you to contribute towards the costs of adaptations and equipment based on a financial assessment. You may experience delays in getting an assessment of need.

Your business

If you run your own company, would you need to hire part-time staff to take over some of your tasks and lighten your workload and worry? Are there other business expenses that would need to be funded whether or not you are bringing in any revenue, such as offices expenses, subscriptions and wages? Having access to several months’ revenue can make the difference between coming back to a profitable business as a going concern and having to start again.
