Why do I have to make decisions on the type of job I could have after I have been diagnosed with a critical illness?

The type of job will only be an issue if your proposed critical illness policy includes “Total and Permanent Disability”. This means that if you suffer from any illness, condition or accident that totally and permanently prevents you from working, then you have a claim. With some critical illness policies, Total and Permeant Disability cover is automatically included, but with others it is an optional extra.

However, before an insurance company will pay out on a “Total and Permanent Disability” claim it needs to know that you are too ill to ever work again.

But it is up to you to decide what being “out of work” means. That is why, if you want cover for Total and Permanent, you need to decide what type of employment cover you require. You normally have three alternatives :-

Conditions that prevent you from: -

  • Following your own existing occupation. This is the most expensive option
  • Following any employment to which you are suited. This is the medium-priced option
  • You’re unfit to do any work of any kind. This is the cheapest option

If you want to discuss these options before you choose, then talk to the Insurance Adviser about it when he/she calls.
